Eighteen years ago one of the most successful Latin artists of all time was taken from us far too soon. Selena Quintanilla, better known as simply Selena, dominated the Latin airwaves with her incredible voice, seventeen top-ten hits on the Billboard charts, seven of which hit number one, and a Grammy Award for her album, Selena Live!. Known for catchy, danceable Spanish tracks such as "Como La Flor" and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", Selena was on the verge of an English crossover before her untimely death, recording songs such as "I Could Fall in Love". I think she would have succeeded on the American charts. She had the gorgeous looks, the talent for dancing and the ability to entertain the crowd.
Today, April 16, would have marked the artist's 42nd birthday and I will be doing nothing but blasting her greatest hits. When I mention my idols of Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert and Cher, Selena sits nicely among them for being one of the first musicians I remember hearing on the radio as a kid. Her passing affected everyone, including me, and is one of reasons Jennifer Lopez has a career, as the singer gave a Golden Globe nominated portrayal of the late beauty in the film Selena. I still cannot believe so many years have passed, but no matter what, her music will continue being a part of my life.
The Hispanic community is familiar with Selena's Spanish hits, but I am hoping more people get a chance to hear what she was capable of when she was singing in English. "Dreaming of You" is one of the most heartfelt love songs I have ever heard. The lyrics sounds as if they are coming straight from her diary and her voice gives me goosebumps for all the right reasons. The song peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, remains her biggest single, and was featured on a number one album which has sold over 3.5 million copies in the U.S. alone. I am pretty sure you have heard the song, even if you are not too familiar with who the singer was. This is how music should sound today!
So as my small tribute to Selena, "Dreaming of You" will be playing on repeat nonstop all day. I will always be dreaming of you Selena. I know your career would have been filled with accomplishments and success. Your music has made an impact on my life and it will continue to do so. Much love! Happy birthday!
