The proper footwear can make or break any athletic activity. Without adequate support, comfort and durability, even a walk in the park can cause irreparable damage to one's feet and the next thing you know you're heading to a podiatrist.

Both casual and serious hikers are particularly concerned about their feet and will go to great lengths to find the perfect hiking shoe for their treks up some of nature's most majestic mountains.

Here are some of the best hiking shoes for men in 2019.

Choose your running shoes carefully - Medical Xpress

Choose your running shoes carefully

(HealthDay)—If you're a runner, the wrong running shoe could sideline you, a foot expert says.

Choose carefully, or you risk discomfort, pain and injuries such as , , , irritated nerves or the loss of a toenail, warned Dr. Christina Rowe-Bauer, a podiatrist with Penn State Health Sports Medicine.

If you're new to running or an experienced runner with foot or leg pain, see a doctor to learn about your , foot type and running style.

"Bring old athletic shoes; the wear patterns can give the doctor clues about things like foot overpronation (rolling inward) or supination (rolling outward)," Rowe-Bauer said in a Penn State news release. "Be honest about any pain experienced during or after running."

When it comes time to buy shoes, there are certain factors you should consider, such as type, running style and terrain, she suggested.

Are your feet high-arched, flat or neutral? What is your running style? Some runners strike the ground first with the heel and roll through to push off the toes to their next stride, while others strike first with the forefoot and push immediately into the next stride.

And, finally, what type of surface are you running on? Shoe tread and cushioning should be appropriate for the surface, whether it's treadmills, asphalt or dirt trails, Rowe-Bauer said.

When buying shoes, do so in-person at a store, preferably one with knowledgeable staff who encourage trial runs in the shoes at or outside the store.

Shop in the late afternoon because feet swell as the day progresses and as a run progresses, Rowe-Bauer said. When trying on shoes, wear the socks you wear while running. Choose shoes that fit well, regardless of size. Foot size changes over the years, and sizes vary by brand and even by model within the same brand.

Select shoes with a wide toe box so that your toes aren't constricted during running, she added.

Once you've found a good pair of shoes, consider buying a spare pair to have when the first pair wears out.

"Don't stock up for lifetime running, though, since the correct pair of shoes today probably will not be the correct pair five years from now," Rowe-Bauer said.

Why you should always buy shoes with Goodyear welted soles - Business Insider

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:15 AM PDT

"It's totally impossible to be well dressed in cheap shoes," Sir Hardy Amies — dressmaker for Queen Elizabeth II — once said.

In today's fast-fashion culture, it can be tempting to go through shoes like disposable items.

When you can get a pair of perfectly good-looking loafers from Asos for $40, it doesn't matter if they don't stand the test of time — when they start falling apart, you can just go and buy another pair, and another, and another.

There are a number of issues with this, though.

Firstly, it's not exactly environmentally friendly to throw out numerous pairs of shoes every year.

Secondly, while that $40 pair of loafers might sound like a bargain at first, that $40 starts adding up when you're replacing your shoes twice a year.

"Shoes are definitely where you spend your money. 100%," Harry Jarman, the founder and Editor-in-chief of men's lifestyle magazine The Gentleman's Journal, told Business Insider recently.

Jarman admitted that he, too, had fallen victim to fast-fashion footwear in the past — "It's like robbery!"

However, just because something sounds like good value, doesn't mean it necessarily is.

English shoemakers Crockett & Jones, for example, have been making shoes by hand since 1879.

Crockett & Jones

"It's a lot of money for a pair of shoes. On anyone's scale," Jarman admitted. A pair of Crockett & Jones shoes start at £355 ($430), and go up to £695 ($843) for their sturdiest pair of boots.

"But, I've had the same pair for 10 years now," Jarman said. "So actually, over time, that becomes more affordable than the [fast fashion] pair that you replace over and over again. And also more sustainable!"

While Crockett & Jones' shoes are undoubtedly high-quality, that's not the only secret to their longevity. The English shoemakers use a Goodyear welt construction, which basically makes the shoes immortal.

A Goodyear welt is a strip of leather that is sewn around the bottom edge of a shoe, attached to both the insole and the upper.

The welt can then be easily unstitched, which thus detaches the sole without damaging the rest of the shoe, meaning it can be replaced time and time again as it is worn down.

This diagram helps explain:

Crockett & Jones

There are, of course, plenty of other manufacturers out there that use a Goodyear welt, but the least you're likely to pay is around £250 ($303), Jarman said.

"Yes, it is expensive but you buy something from there that will last you the whole of your life," Jarman said.

"And there are some really expensive shoes out there that you can't replace that cost £150 [$182] and then after a year, you have to throw them out."

Jarman hopes that as people focus more and more on craft brands with heritage and independence, the trend will lean more towards quality than quantity: "It's just asking people to think before they go and buy something."

WASHINGTON -  Coco Gauff and Catherine McNally are WTA Champions. The former is 15 years old, the latter is 17.

None of the above is a typo.

Playing in their first ever WTA doubles event together Gauff and McNally assembled a fairytale run throughout the 2019 Citi Open. They entered the tournament as a Wild Card, riding off of the success of Gauff's incredible run at Wimbledon weeks prior. Neither of them had won a main draw doubles match at the WTA level before.

Neither of that mattered or was on the mind of the duo in Washington D.C. this week. They oozed confidence and knew they were capable of competing for a championship.

"We didn't go into the tournament seeing how far we can go. We went into the tournament with getting to the finals on our mind," Gauff said earlier in the week. "I don't really put expectations on us or myself in general, because I just feel like whatever happens, obviously, me and her know that we have the game to win."

In four matches to the trophy Gauff and McNally rolled through their competition without dropping a single set. None of their sets were even particularly close. They knocked off two seeded duos including Maria Sanchez (world No. 68) and Fanny Stollar (No. 106) in the Final 6-2, 6-2.

Not once in the tournament did the two lack the mental fortitude, in fact, they probably had the most of the all the players. Even with McNally thriving in the singles draw, including on playing the day of the Final, there was no concern or doubt they were going to win.

"I think we just worried about ourselves every single match and our game plan," McNally said to reporters after claiming the title. "We just executed it really well and that's what the scores show."

A pretty remarkable showing for the young American pair that had only played together once before and almost didn't make the tournament. Up until five minutes before the doubles draw ceremony, they were not even considered. Then, tournament owner Mark Ein got "one of the best phone calls of his life" and without hesitation granted the two a spot into the field.

"I was actually thinking about playing with someone else and then once I knew that Coco was in, I decided to play with her," McNally said. "We're such a good doubles team, and we just have great chemistry.

McNally singles run will be overshadowed by this victory. Like in doubles, she entered the event as a Wild Card with no main draw wins to her name. She made it all the way to the semifinals.

While this is the first title for the two as professionals, it is not the first time they've played. It was only once before that they decided to partner up, at the Junior U.S. Open. There, they were also crowned champions.

Needless to say, as they are both under 18 years of age, the future is extremely bright for the Americans. With all instant success they've had and no losses as a doubles team, they will enter the U.S. Open doubles draw together. And the two are not shying away about what they are capable of.

"I honestly believe that we can [win]. We can do whatever we want when we put our minds to it," Gauff said unwaveringly. "I think to be honest the way we're playing we can go as far as we want."

As for now, McNally is just going to catch up on sleep. She played eight matches in six days.
