It's been a while since we last heard from The X Factor UK season three winner Leona Lewis. After serving up brilliant, iconic pop tunes including "Bleeding Love" and "Happy", the soulful artist's last proper studio album, 2012s Glassheart, was not even given a US release date and did not prove as successful as her previous efforts despite an infectious new sound and countless single possibilities.
For months, Lewis has been teasing details about her anticipated comeback with intriguing song snippets and messages through social media, leading up to today's release of "Fire Under My Feet", the lead single taken from her upcoming fifth studio album, I Am.
The new track opens up with a raw vocal introduction before a gospel-like, swinging beat, heavy with instrumentals comes through to support Lewis' always spectacular vocal performance. The song will be immediately compared to Adele's smash hit "Rolling In The Deep", and while the two songs bare some structural similarities, "Fire Under My Feet" stands on its own thanks to an inspiring message and solid songwriting. This is your new anthem.
Never one to shy away from a challenge, Lewis informs listeners to never let the fire, the drive, be extinguished no matter the obstacles. "I got fire under my feet, and I feel it in my heartbeat, oh you can't put out these flames, you can't keep me down in my seat," she belts on the track's claptastic and exciting chorus.
"Fire Under My Feet" is the perfect "comeback" single for the talented artist. Lewis' vocals are thankfully the true star of the new release, but the radio-tailored, stomping production will aid in creating a potential summer smash. Listeners will be able to relate to the lyrics, the beat will get heads bopping and feet tapping as fans welcome back Lewis with her first original offering in two years.
To help with the song's deserved future success, Lewis has paired the catchy tune with a just-as-inspiring music video by showing social outcasts come out of the shadows to stand proud of who they are. It's a simple yet effective visual that does not take away from the power of the track. "Fire Under My Feet" will be burning up the charts once officially release... welcome back Leona!
UPDATE (05/12/15): Lewis' is not taking the easy approach when it comes to her brilliant comeback single. The artist has already commissioned a dance remix just a day after the song's official premiere. The Endor remix sounds a bit like a Kiesza creation while showing that Lewis is not finished with the genre inspiration which created her fabulous Glassheart album. Listen below.
