Do kids read Encyclopedia Brown books anymore? For years when I was young, years before I'd ever heard of Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett, my idea of a great mystery author was Donald J. Sobel, the genius behind Encyclopedia Brown and the
Five-Minute Mystery books (which I especially enjoyed because at the time they seemed so much more adult). As a result, it took me a very long time to realize that knowing cobwebs don't catch on fire or that dogs are colour-blind doesn't actually come in hand when it comes to apprehending killers.
That basic fact still hasn't penetrated the heads of the 18-year-old heroes of the very funny new comedy
Mystery Team, the first feature film from the YouTube sketch-comedy troupe
Derrick Comedy. It's also my "Hidden Gem on DVD" selection this week for CBC Radio in Edmonton: click
